Jeranimo wins San Gabriel at Santa Anita
December 27, 2010ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) - Jeranimo defeated Proudinsky by 21/2 lengths to win Monday's $150,000 San Gabriel Stakes at Santa Anita.
Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Jeranimo ran 1 1-8 miles on the turf in 1:47.20 and paid $10.20, $5.40 and $2.20
Two-time defending champion Proudinsky returned $5.40 and $2.80. The Usual Q.T. was another 21/2 lengths back in third and paid $2.20 as the 7-10 favorite.
The victory, worth $90,000, increased Jeranimo's career earnings to $429,400, with five wins in 15 starts.
In the $100,000 California Breeders' Champion Stakes, California Nectar won the fillies division by 11/2 lengths over Warren's Flyer, giving jockey Patrick Valenzuela his first stakes victory at Santa Anita in four years.
The 48-year-old rider's license had been suspended in California for much of that time following a substance abuse violation.
"It's great," Valenzuela said. "It's like being back home at Santa Anita. There's no greater feeling."
California Nectar ran seven furlongs in 1:21.66 and paid $10.80 to win.
Bathing Beauty was second and Teddy's Promise finished third in the field of seven California-bred 2-year-old fillies.
