Haimish Hy beats favorite to take Hollywood Derby
November 29, 2010INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) -Haimish Hy came from next-to-last at the top of the stretch to beat favorite Sebastian Flyte by a neck in the $250,000 Hollywood Derby on Sunday.
Ridden by Garrett Gomez, who was returning to Southern California after eight months in Kentucky and New York, Haimish Hy was last in the field of eight 3-year-olds in the early stages, moved up to seventh by the second turn and found room for the winning run on the outside, avoiding the traffic that snagged the favorite to take the Grade 1 victory.
``I swung him out turning for home and moved him from behind those horses,'' Gomez said. ``His heart got big on him and he came home really well for us.''
Haimish Hy covered 1 1/4 miles on turf course in 2:01.20 and paid $25.80, $8.20 and $4.80. Sebastian Flyte returned $3.60 and $2.40, and Juniper Pass paid $3.80 to show.
Trained and partly owned by Art Sherman, Haimish Hy's first win came against $32,000 claimers at Golden Gate Fields 14 months ago. The colt has won three of four races on turf and five of 10 overall. The $150,000 first prize pushed his career total to $287,900.
Also Sunday, Neversaidiwassweet and jockey Rafael Bejarono rallied to beat Holiday for Kitten by a half-length victory in the $100,000 Miesque Stakes, a turf mile race for 2-year-old fillies. The favorite, Cloneylass, was third.
