Horse racing official, publicist Schwartz dies

OCEANPORT, N.J. (AP) -Steven Schwartz, a longtime horse racing publicist and racetrack official in New Jersey and New York, has died. He was 64.

Schwartz died Saturday at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune following complications from surgery, said John Heims, spokesman for Monmouth Park in Oceanport. Schwartz was a resident of Monmouth Beach.

A former president of the Turf Publicists of America, the New York native began his career at American Turf Monthly and worked as a writer, handicapper and editor for several publications.

Schwartz also served as an executive assistant to the president at the New York Racing Association and as its communications director.

After joining the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, he served as morning line maker, program analyst and TV analyst before becoming media relations director for the NJSEA's racetracks.
