Goldikova wins Cartier Horse of the Year award

LONDON (AP) -Goldikova, the 5-year-old mare who has won three Breeders' Cup Miles, has been chosen Horse of the Year at the Cartier Racing Awards.

Trained by Freddie Head, Goldikova becomes the first to win the older horse award in consecutive years.

Goldikova won five Group One races this year, pushing her total to a European-record 12. Her biggest victory came at Churchill Downs in Kentucky when she made history by winning the Breeders' Cup Mile under jockey Oliver Peslier for the third straight year.

Her only loss this year came in the Prix Jacques Le Marois.

Head and Gerard Wertheimer, who shares Goldikova with his brother, Alain, received the award at a ceremony in London on Tuesday.
