November 14, 2010INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) -Unusual Suspect edged early leader Temple City by a head in the $250,000 Hollywood Turf Cup, claiming his first Grade 1 victory and passing the million mark in career earnings Saturday at Hollywood Park.
Ridden by Corey Nakatani for trainer Barry Abrams, the 6-year-old Unusual Suspect ran second to Temple City for much of the 1 1/2-mile race, but shot past him in the final yards to win in 2:25.83.
``He broke really well and I was in a pretty good position,'' said Nakatani, who won the Turf Cup for the third time. ``They were going slow, so I just let him do his own thing.''
Buenos Dias was a close third and the favorite, Where's the Remote, got no closer than fifth and faded to last in the field of eight.
Unusual Suspect paid $22.40, $9.40 and $5. Temple City returned $6.20 and $4, and Buenos Dias paid $7 to show.
It was the ninth win in 55 career starts for Unusual Suspect. He earned $150,000 to become a career millionaire at $1,035,171.
Abrams said he would like to retire the horse to stud, but may send him to Australia to race for another year first.
``This horse deserves to be a stallion, Abrams said. ``But in this country distance horses aren't popular stallions. So my thinking, if I send him to Australia I can race him there a year and then retire him to stud.''
