Derby winner Super Saver to stand at WinStar
November 12, 2010VERSAILLES, Ky. (AP) -Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver will stand for $20,000 at WinStar Farm.
The 3-year-old colt was retired last month due to bone bruises in all four legs. He won the Derby in May, holding off Ice Box to make jockey Calvin Borel the first rider to win three Derbys in a four-year span.
A shot at the first Triple Crown in more than 30 years disappeared two weeks later at the Preakness, when he faded to eighth. The 3-year-old colt was a nonfactor in the Haskell and Travers before the bruises were found. WinStar limited Super Saver to barn rest for 60 days before making the decision to retire him.
WinStar president Elliott Walden said there has been an ``overwhelming'' response from breeders since Super Saver's retirement.
