May Day Rose, Baffert wins Sharp Cat at Hollywood
November 8, 2010INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) -May Day Rose, a 2-year-old filly trained by Bob Baffert, cruised to a wire-to-wire victory Sunday in the $100,000 Sharp Cat Stakes at Hollywood Park.
Despite coming off a two-month layoff and running in the longest race of her brief career, May Day Rose and jockey Martin Garcia went straight to the lead in the field of six, led by 2 lengths at the halfway point and pulled away to win by 4 1/4, covering 1 1-16 miles in 1:44.39.
The filly hadn't run since her maiden win, a 5 1/2-furlong race at Del Mar on Sept. 4.
``I think she's always wanted a distance,'' Garcia said. ``She's got a really long stride. I think she's going to be a good filly. From five furlongs to go a mile and one-sixteenth is really a big difference.''
True Way of Grace rallied from last to pass favorite Big Tiz in the final yards for second.
May Day Rose paid $6.60, $4 and $2.60. True Way of Grace returned $6.40 and $2.80, and Big Tiz paid $2.40.
A Florida-bred daughter of Rockport Harbor, May Day Rose has two victories and a second in three career starts.
