Briecat takes feature on Oak Tree closing day
November 1, 2010INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) - Briecat held off Westwood Pride by a neck Sunday in the $150,000 Las Palmas Handicap for fillies and mares on the final day of the Oak Tree meeting at Hollywood Park.
Briecat, ridden by Patrick Valenzuela, ran a mile on the turf in 1:34.77 and paid $29, $10.60 and $5.60. Westwood Pride, ridden by Rafael Bejarano, returned $7.20 and $3.80, and Turning Top paid $2.80 to show.
``She's very, very tough on the lead,'' trainer Vladimir Cerin said. ``The key with her is to open up when she turns for home and hope they can't get her. Today they couldn't.
A 5-year-old mare owned by David and Holly Wilson, Briecat won for the eighth time in 24 starts. She earned $90,000, taking her career total to $467,805.
Bejarano edged Joel Rosario 35-24 to win the Oak Tree riding title.
Trainer Bob Baffert won the Oak Tree riding title for the second straight year and fifth time since 1997. He had 11 victories, one more than Doug O'Neill and John Sadler.
The Oak Tree racing season has traditionally been held across town at Santa Anita Park, but moved to Hollywood Park for 2010 and 2011 because of uncertainty over the synthetic surface at Santa Anita, where a dirt track is being installed again before the winter-spring meeting begins Dec. 26.
Hollywood Park's regular autumn meet opens Thursday.
