Eye of Taurus wins Belmont's Athenia
October 17, 2010NEW YORK (AP) - Eye of Taurus beat Mary's Follies by three lengths Saturday in the $100,000 Athenia Stakes for fillies and mares on the turf at Belmont Park.
Following her win in the Revidere Stakes at Monmouth Park, Eye of Taurus has hit her best career stride late in her 4-year-old season with a sixth victory in 19 starts.
Eddie Castro was aboard for trainer Kiaran McLauglin as Eye of Taurus ran the 1 1-16 miles in 1:47.04 over the soft course.
``I got good position behind the front-running horses,'' Castro said. ``When I hit the top of the stretch and asked her, she gave me a nice kick. She ran big today, like she did last time at Monmouth.''
Eye of Taurus paid $13.60, $5.80 and $3.90. Mary's Follies, the 2-1 favorite, returned $4.10 and $3.60. Missit paid $7.90 to show.
