Former Derby winner Real Quiet dies at 15
September 29, 2010LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Former Kentucky Derby and Preakness champion Real Quiet has died.
Penn Ridge Farm general manager Patrick Morell said the former champion 3-year-old died Monday at 15.
Trained by Bob Baffert, owned by Mike Pegram and ridden by Kent Desormeaux, Real Quiet narrowly missed winning the Triple Crown in 1998. He edged Victory Gallop by a half-length in the Derby before beating him by 2 1/2 lengths in the Preakness.
Real Quiet's bid to become the first horse in 20 years to sweep all three American classics ended when Victory Gallop beat him by a nose in the Belmont.
Real Quiet won the Hollywood Gold Cup and Pimlico Special at age 4 before being retired to stud.
