Apart easily wins Super Derby at Louisiana Downs
September 26, 2010BOSSIER CITY, La. (AP) - Apart used a strong stretch run to easily win the Super Derby on Saturday at Louisiana Downs.
Apart, ridden by Jesse Campbell, was fourth at the final turn of the Grade II, $500,000 race for 3-year-olds. He then swung wide, charged to the lead and won going away ahead of runnerup Distorted Economy. Hurricane Ike finished third.
Apart won the Super Derby Prelude in August at Louisiana Downs and is believed to be the first Prelude winner to win the Super Derby.
Apart finished the 1 1-8 miles in 1:52.31 and paid $6.60, $3.40 and $2.40. Distorted Economy returned $3.80 and $2.60, and Hurricane Ike paid $2.20.
It was the second win in the last three years for trainer Albert Stall Jr., who won the 2008 race with My Pal Charlie.
``We figured Hurricane Ike was going to make a run like he did,'' Stall said. ``The jock didn't want him to go to the front. We figured we could wait like we did. We just wanted to stay within striking distance.''
Apart went the first one-half mile in 49.09 seconds and was at 1:14.63 after three-quarters.
Owned by Adele D. Silschneider, Apart was the 2-1 co-favorite along with undefeated Golden Moka, who finished fifth in the six-horse field for the Panamanian's first loss in five career races.
