The Usual Q.T. is early choice for Pacific Classic
August 28, 2010DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) - The Usual Q.T., defending champion Richard's Kid and 7-year-old Awesome Gem are among 10 horses entered in the $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar.
The Usual Q.T. is the early 3-1 favorite for the 1 1/4-mile race Saturday at the seaside track north of San Diego. He'll break from the No. 10 post under Victor Espinoza.
Richard's Kid, who drew post No. 6 under Mike Smith, is second choice at 7-2. Awesome Gem will break from post nine under David Flores as the early 9-2 third choice in his record fourth attempt to win the Grade 1 race.
The winner is guaranteed a spot in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic on Nov. 6 at Churchill Downs.
Trained by Jim Cassidy, The Usual Q.T. comes into the Classic off a win in the Eddie Read Stakes on the turf at Del Mar. All eight of his career wins have been on the grass, while the Classic is run on the track's artificial Polytrack surface.
Richard's Kid won last year at 24-1 odds after making a furious stretch run. Trained by Bob Baffert, he has seven wins in 25 career starts. Baffert will be at Saratoga on Saturday to saddle horses there.
Awesome Gem was second in 2007 and seventh twice the last two years in his previous attempts to win for trainer Craig Dollase. The gelding won the Hollywood Gold Cup in July. He's earned more than $2.2 million while making 36 career starts.
