Delta Downs increases Jackpot purse to $1 million
August 26, 2010VINTON, La. (AP) - Delta Downs has raised the purse for its Jackpot race to $1 million, giving 2-year-olds a chance to earn more graded stakes money to qualify for a spot in the Kentucky Derby starting gate.
Boyd Gaming, which owns the Louisiana racetrack, says the $250,000 increase and moving the 1 1-16-mile race up two weeks to Nov. 20 will increase its importance on the national calendar.
The Delta Downs Jackpot will be the second-richest race in the country for 2-year-olds behind the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.
The Kentucky Derby field is limited to 20 3-year-old starters based on graded stakes earnings.
