Kantharos runs away with Saratoga Special
August 17, 2010SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) - Kantharos, the overwhelming favorite ridden by Garrett Gomez, shrugged off a challenge from Bail Out the Cat and drew away to an authoritative 7 1/4-length victory in the $150,000, 6 1/2-furlong Saratoga Special for 2-year-olds at Saratoga Race Course on Monday.
The 105th running of the Special was the third win for undefeated Kantharos and follows a similarly lopsided victory in the Bashford Manor Stakes last month at Churchill Downs. He ran the distance over a muddy track in 1:18.63 and was eased by Gomez in the late stages.
The Steve Asmussen-trained Kantharos is owned by Stonestreet Stable, for which he earned $90,000. He paid $2.30 and $2.10. With only four starters, show wagering was suspended. Bail Out the Cat paid $2.30 to place. Manchurian High was third.
