Sidney's Candy wins La Jolla Handicap at Del Mar
August 15, 2010DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) - Heavy favorite Sidney's Candy led from gate to wire and set a Del Mar turf course record in the $150,000 La Jolla Handicap Saturday, the 3-year-old colt's first win since finishing 17th in the Kentucky Derby.
Sidney's Candy and jockey Joel Rosario beat Kid Edward by 2 1/2 lengths and covered 1 1-16 miles in 1:39.52, breaking a record of 1:39.67 set by Mea Domina in 2006.
``He broke so sharp and he just wanted to go,'' Rosario said. ``So I let him go.''
The John Sadler-trained Sidney's Candy also holds the Del Mar main track record for 5 1/2 furlongs, set last year as a 2-year-old.
Sadler had high hopes for Sidney's Candy on the first Saturday in May after a victory in the Santa Anita Derby in April. But after pressing the pace early, the colt faded.
``Things didn't go right for him in Kentucky, but he's one of the best 3-year-olds around,'' Sadler said.
Sidney's Candy paid $4.80, $3.40 and $3. Kid Edward paid $3.40 and $3.40. Long shot Alphie's Bet was well back in third and paid $5.20 to show.
It was the fifth win in nine overall starts for Sidney's Candy, who is owned by the Craig Family Trust. The colt earned $90,000 for Saturday's win, taking his lifetime total to $803,560.
