Horse dies after crashing during race
August 1, 2010VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - A horse at Vancouver's Hastings Racecourse has died after crashing into a barrier shortly after leaving the gate.
Three-year-old Private Mambo bucked off his jockey, smashed through the winner's circle and was killed instantly Saturday. The jockey wasn't injured, but a security worker was rushed to a hospital for surgery.
There were about 5,000 spectators on hand during the busy weekend leading up to one of the track's biggest races of the year, the B.C. Derby.
An official with the Great Canadian Gaming Corp., which runs the track, says the accident was very upsetting. The official says the security worker was in stable condition.
Races were canceled for the rest of the day to preserve the scene for the investigation.
