Santa Anita begins repairs to synthetic surface

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) - Santa Anita has begun repair work on its troubled synthetic surface that failed to drain properly during the winter-spring meet.

The track closed last Sunday to training for the first time in two years, and repair work began Monday on the Pro-Ride surface along with planned maintenance to the stable area.

Track president George Haines says there were problems with drainage through the home stretch and in the area near the finish line. The track is being taken down to its base to try to fix the problems that occurred when there was significant rainfall.

In the stable area, stalls and tack rooms will be worked on, while roads will be re-graded.

Santa Anita will reopen for training on Sept. 8. The Oak Tree meet begins Sept. 29 and runs through Oct. 31.
