July 19, 2010INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) -Marlang led from gate to wire in Sunday's $100,000 Sunset Handicap, the closing-day feature at Hollywood Park.
Marlang and jockey Joel Rosario, who was the leading rider for the third consecutive Hollywood meeting, went straight to the front of the field of six older horses in the Grade 3 Sunset, led by as many as 3 1/2 lengths and beat Champ Pegasus by one length, covering 1 1/2 miles on turf in 2:25.45.
``He went to the post quiet but was sweating a little,'' said the 25-year-old Rosario, whose 79 victories left him four ahead of riding-title runner-up Rafael Bejarano. ``I sent him to the lead and he got a little tough after that.''
Marlang, the favorite, paid $6.80, $3.60 and $3.20. Champ Pegasus paid $3.60 and $3.20. Unusual Suspect was third and paid $3.20 to show.
A 5-year-old trained by Neil Drysdale for owner and breeder Gustav Schickedanz, Marlang ended a six-race losing streak and won for the first time in nearly two years. The horse has won five of 15 starts overall and earned a career total of $558,212.
Doug O'Neill saddled 28 winners to become the meet's leading trainer despite a 15-day suspension that ended Saturday. Bob Baffert was second with 27 victories.
