Global Hunter wins American Handicap at Hollywood

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) -Seven-year-old Global Hunter rallied in the stretch to win the $150,000 American Handicap on Sunday at Hollywood Park, then injured his ankle just after the finish line.

Ridden by Brice Blanc, the Argentine-bred Global Hunter sat third for most of the race, moved up to second coming out of the second turn and caught pace setter Temple City in the final yards, winning by a head in 1:48 for 1 1-8 miles on the turf.

The winner took a bad step as Blanc was pulling him up and injured his right front ankle. He was immediately returned to trainer A.C. Avila's stable. The extent of the injury was not immediately clear.

Global Hunter paid $8, $5 and $3.80. Temple City returned $7.80 and $5.40, and Hyades paid $3.60 to show.
