Evenings End wins Monmouth Park feature
June 21, 2010OCEANPORT, N.J. (AP) -Evenings End took the lead near the final turn and drew off to win the $100,000 Bernie Dowd Handicap at Monmouth Park on Sunday, beating Luna Park by 1 3/4 lengths.
The 5-year-old colt covered the mile and 70 yards over a fast track in 1:44 2/5 and returned $32.20, $17.20 and $9.60. Ridden by Francisco Maysonett and trained by Timothy J. Kelly, it marked the sixth win in 25 career starts for Evenings End, who boosted his overall earnings to $261,206.
In the co-feature, Flamin' Hot won the $100,000 Anderson Fowler Stakes after top finisher Escrow Kid was disqualified for drifting out in the lane in the stretch.
Flamin' Hot, who finished a nose behind Escrow Kid, covered the 5 1/2 furlongs on a firm turf course in 1:02 1/5. Ridden by Alan Garcia and trained by Rick Violette Jr., the 3-year-old gelding paid $4, $2.80 and $2.20.
