Lady Shakespeare wins Belmont's New York Stakes
June 20, 2010NEW YORK (AP) -Lady Shakespeare rallied from last to beat Changing Skies by 2 3/4 lengths Saturday in the $142,500 New York Stakes for fillies and mares on the turf at Belmont.
The complexion of the race changed at the start when Gozzip Girl, the 5-2 second choice, stumbled badly and dumped jockey Ramon Dominguez. Both horse and rider walked off, apparently unharmed.
That left only four runners for the 1 1/4 mile race. John Velazquez let Lady Shakespeare drop back in the compact field. She started picking up the pace on the final turn and stormed home to her seventh win in 12 starts.
``Turning for home, I hit her left handed and put her in the clear,'' Velazquez said. ``It was like an instant reaction, she went right to them. She was so quick, I couldn't believe it. She got to the lead, her ears went up, and she knew what to do.''
The 4-year-old trained by Roger Attfield was timed in 2:00.34 on the firm course, paying $6.50, $3.50 and $2.10 as the 2-1 favorite. Changing Skies returned $6.10 and $3.30. Ave, Lady Shakespeare's stablemate who ran uncoupled in the wagering, paid $2.70 to show.
Daveron finished last after setting the pace.
