3 harness drivers injured in spill at Meadowlands
June 19, 2010EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -Three drivers have been taken to the hospital following a spill in the second race at Meadowlands Racetrack on Friday night. Six drivers were unseated in the accident.
It occurred early in the race when Four Starzz Left stumbled to the ground, tossing George Brennan out of the sulky.
Drivers Daniel Dube, Brian Sears, Eric Goodell, Ron Pierce and Richard Silverman were unseated in the chain reaction that followed.
Silverman and Dube were taken immediately to Hackensack University Medical Center, and Pierce was later sent for X-rays on a sore shoulder.
Silverman, the most seriously hurt of the drivers, suffered a severe concussion. He was set to undergo additional tests Saturday.
Dube was being evaluated for a possible concussion.
X-rays on Pierce's right shoulder were negative. He was cleared to resume driving on Saturday.
After coming back to win the third race, Sears opted off the rest of his drives and went to the hospital to be treated for a severe cut and swelling of his left arm.
Brennan also later opted off the remainder of his drives.
Goodell returned to the sulky for the balance of the card and picked up his 4,000th career win behind Answer The Bell in the final race of the night.
All six horses involved in the spill escaped serious injury, the track said.
