Way With Words wins Monmouth Park feature
June 14, 2010OCEANPORT, N.J. (AP) -Starfish Bay set a course record while winning the $100,000 Candy Eclair Stakes at Monmouth Park on Sunday, beating Candy Cane by 3 1/2 lengths.
The 4-year-old filly ran the roughly 5 1/2 furlongs on a firm turf course in 1:00.76, scoring a wire-to-wire win and besting the 1:01.00 mark set by Terrific Challenge on Sept. 10, 2006.
Trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by John Velazquez, Starfish Bay returned $3.80, $2.60 and $2.40 and won for the sixth time in 12 career starts. Candy Cane paid $3.60 and $2.80, while Quebrada Shiner was three-quarters of a length back in third and paid $4.
In the co-feature, Way With Words took the lead in the stretch and drew off to win the $100,000 Open Mind Handicap, beating Dakota Doll by three lengths.
Ridden by Eddie Castro and trained by Mary Eppler, the 6-year-old mare covered the six furlongs on a fast track in 1:10.44 and paid $4, $2.60 and $2.60. It was her 10th win in 25 career starts.
Dakota Doll, who set the early pace, returned $5.20 and $4, while Moneigh Lisa was 4 1/4 lengths back in third and paid $5.40.
