Rail Trip wins Californian at Hollywood Park
June 13, 2010INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) -Rail Trip defeated Sangaree by 2 3/4 lengths to win Saturday's $150,000 Californian at Hollywood Park.
Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Rail Trip ran 1 1-8 miles on the artificial Cushion Track in 1:48.49 and paid $2.40, $2.20 and $2.10 as the 1-5 favorite.
Sangaree returned $5.20 and $3.40, while Slew's Tiznow was another half-length back in third and paid $6.20 to show. Spurrier was fourth for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, who also oversees Sangaree.
``I had so much horse at the end,'' said Bejarano, who is 2 for 2 with Rail Trip. ``It was nice to be able to save something for next time. He's been training so good and he was really fit. I felt a little pressure at the half-mile, but he kept on running. He's getting better and better and you can do anything you want with him.''
Rail Trip won the Mervyn LeRoy Handicap last month, and became the first horse to win both the LeRoy and Californian in the same year since Even The Score in 2004. He will defend his title in the $500,000 Hollywood Gold Cup on July 10.
``This year, he's bigger, stronger and heavier. He's matured a lot,'' trainer Ron Ellis said. ``He's a real versatile horse and that's going to come in handy at some point. This year, by purpose, we wanted to bring him in and point for the Breeders' Cup and have him ready for the second half of the year.''
Rail Trip has eight wins in 11 career starts and earnings of $967,790. He's won five of seven at Hollywood Park.
In the $62,500 Desert Stormer Handicap, Free Flying Soul won by 1 1/2 lengths under Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith.
Free Flying Soul ran six furlongs in 1:09.10 and paid $5, $2.80 and $2.20. Alpha Kitten returned $3.40 and $2.80, while Fund Raiser was another nose back in third and paid $6.20.
She has six wins in 15 starts and earnings of $393,177.
