Life At Ten wins the Phipps at Belmont
June 13, 2010NEW YORK (AP) -Life At Ten extended her winning streak to five, beating 3-5 favorite Unrivaled Belle by 2 3/4 lengths in the $245,000 Ogden Phipps Handicap for fillies and mares at Belmont Park.
After a brief stumble at the start, Life At Ten rushed up to set the pace against four rivals. She led all the way with John Velazquez aboard for trainer Todd Pletcher.
Unrivaled Belle, upset winner over Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra most recently in the La Troienne Stakes at Churchill Downs, held second throughout and offered a stern challenge turning for home.
Life At Ten easily turned back that bid, completing the 1 1-16 miles on the fast track in 1:40.72.
Owned by Cynthia DeBartolo, Life At Ten launched her winning streak last November at Aqueduct, taking an allowance race followed by a pair of small stakes over the winter. Most recently, she headed to Chicago to capture the Sixty Sails Handicap at Hawthorne. The Grade 1 Phipps was the richest and most prestigious race of her career.
Life At Ten is 6-5-1 in 13 starts, with her only off-the-board performance coming last September with a seventh-place finish over a yielding turf course at Belmont.
Life At Ten, the 2-1 second choice, paid $6.60, $2.70 and $2.10. Unrivaled Belle returned $2.40 and $2.10. Funny Moon paid $2.10 to show.
Manitoba Miss was fourth with Pumpkin Shell the trailer.
Life At Ten earned $150,000, pushing her earnings to $459,267.
