Acclamation wins Whittingham Handicap
June 7, 2010INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) -Acclamation led all the way and defeated Hyades by 1 1/2 lengths to win the $250,000 Charles Whittingham Memorial Handicap on Saturday at Hollywood Park.
Ridden by Christian Santiago Reyes, Acclamation ran 1 1/4 miles on the turf in 1:59.45 and paid $8.20, $5 and $4. Hyades returned $11.40 and $8, while Brushburn was another three-quarters of a length back in third and paid $8.60 to show.
Acclamation became the second horse to win the Jim Murray Memorial Handicap and the Whittingham, joining Storming Home who did it in 2003. Acclamation won the Murray on May 15 by a record 7 1/2 lengths.
The win was the fourth in 19 career starts for Acclamation, the first California-bred to win the race since Lava Man in 2006. He increased his earnings to $497,048.
