Inherit the Gold wins Big A's Excelsior
April 2, 2011NEW YORK (AP) - Inherit the Gold won the $98,000 Excelsior Stakes at Aqueduct on Saturday, beating Modern Cowboy by 61/4 lengths for his fifth straight win.
Eddie Castro was aboard for trainer James Hooper as the lone New York-bred in the field scored the richest win of his career in a race named for the state motto, timing 1:50.34 for the 1 1-8 miles.
The 5-year-old gelding paid $4.80, $2.40 and $2.10 as the 7-5 favorite. Modern Cowboy returned $2.70 and $2.10. Understatement earned $2.30.
Inherit the Gold improved to 7-14. His previous two victories coming in races restricted to state breds.
