Hastings Park History

Hastings Racecourse has been capturing the imagination of Vancouverites and visitors alike for 116 years. Today, Hastings is a proud part of Great Canadian Gaming Corporation, British Columbia’s foremost casino and gaming operator, and the largest community-based gaming management company in Western Canada. It is open for live thoroughbred racing every weekend from April to November, Friday nights from June to September and year-round for simulcast racing. It offers a variety of dining experiences, from casual to fine dining. Before moving towards the eastern part of the city of Vancouver, horseracing used to take place at the corner of Howe and Nelson Streets – the same place where the old Hotel Vancouver was located. A cluster of horsemen formed the B. C. Jockey Club and started cleaning land for constructing a horseracing track. Though the Vancouver Exhibition took place in 1910, the Hastings racetrack came into being in 1942. A new grandstand was put up apart from renovation work of the racing surface in 1965; lights were installed for night racing in 1968. Great Canadian Casinos and Wall Financial Corporation entered into a deal to acquire Hastings Entertainment Inc in March 2004.
