Afleet Express wins $200,000 Pegasus Stakes
June 20, 2010OCEANPORT, N.J. (AP) -Afleet Express took the lead near the top of the stretch and drew off to win the $200,000 Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth Park on Saturday, beating Afleet Again by 1 3/4 lengths.
Trained by James Jerkens and ridden by Javier Castellano, the 3-year-old colt covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:45.4 and returned $6, $4 and $4.20 in winning the Grade 3 race. It was his first stakes win and third victory in five career starts, boosting his earnings to $185,140.
Afleet Again paid $5.20 and $4, while Soaring Empire was 1 1/4 lengths back in third and returned $4.40.
Afleet Express and Afleet Again were both sired by Afleet Alex, winner of the 2005 Preakness and Belmont Stakes.
