Lillie Langtry wins Coronation Stakes at Ascot
June 19, 2010ASCOT, England (AP) -Race favorite Lillie Langtry won the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot on Friday.
Trainer Aidan O'Brien's filly sat close to the rail early in the mile race before taking control to finish in 1 minute, 39.69 seconds. Gile Na Greine was second and Jacqueline Quest third.
Earlier, Trainer Richard Hannon and jockey Richard Hughes combined for a third time this week as Memory took the Albany Stakes. Hayley Turner failed to become the second female jockey to ride an Ascot winner (after Gay Kelleway in 1987) as she came in a head behind on Margot Did.
In the King Edward VII Stakes, Frankie Dettori rode his third winner of the week as Monterosso beat out Arctic Cosmos and Buzzword.
Rainbow Peak won the Wolferton Handicap, with Kings Gambit second and Kingdom Of Fife third.
On the fourth day of racing at Royal Ascot, the prestigious Coronation Stakes marked the first winner of the week for O'Brien.
``We are delighted, we always thought she was a very good filly. She was a very good filly last year, she had a little injury at the back end and it's all credit to everyone for getting her back,'' he said of Lillie Langtry.
