Bob is a second generation trainer of his family who learned the art of training horses from his father Paul Holthus. With his wife Bonnie, he spends his time training at Kilkerry Farm, Arkansas and Louisville. Bob and Bonnie have two sons, David and Paul and a daughter Debbie.

Bob Holthus is an American thoroughbr ed racehorse trainer, who is presently residing at Nebraska. Bob Holthus is a renowned trainer, who has several winning titles under his belt. He trained the first winning horse at Columbus in Nebraska in 1952. During his fifty years of training, he has posted win at many racetracks including Arlington Park, Ellis Park, Detroit Race Course, Louisiana Downs, Turfway Park and Hawthorne Race Track, apart from Oaklawn Park. Holthus bagged his first championsh ip title in 1967. It was followed by the years-1971 , 1977,1978, 1982, 1985. He has recorded wins at three straight crowns in the years- 1989-1990- 1991. He was given the Arkansas Hall of Fame Honor in 2000. Bob Holthus is believed to be the most winning trainer at the Spa meet. He has won as many as nine titles. In the 2005 racing season, Bob had 40 horses. Of his favorite horses there are Proper Reality and Lawyer Ron. Both these horses had won at the Arkansas Derby meet. Some other stakes winners that he has trained are- Greater Good, Level Playingfie ld, Ruby Surprise, Dave's Friend and Top Avenger. At present, Holthus has four Derby horses- Our Trade Winds, Proper Reality, Pro Prado and Greater Good.
